This sashiko tailored jacket by Studio D'Artisan replicates the Kyoto black montsuki dyeing technique called "Aishita." The deep black, achieved by repeatedly layering black over indigo, represents the ultimate black tone that can only be created with Kyo Kuro Montsuki dyeing. The base fabric is 14.0oz of original selvedge sashiko, known for its thick, uneven texture.
The history of Kyoto black montsuki dyeing goes back to the Heian period when ink dyeing, the process of coloring fabric with ink, was practiced. In ancient times, monks and samurai wore these garments as formal attire. During the Edo period, a technique called "Beni-shita" and "Aishita" was developed, where fabric was under-dyed with red or indigo to achieve a deep black color.
