Why choose selvedge denim from a dedicated shop
Most stores treat denim as one category among many. We built the whole shop around it.
Selvedge denim is woven on traditional shuttle looms to produce a clean, self-finished edge. That process creates fabric with more texture and character than anything made on modern projectile looms. The best way to figure out if a pair of jeans is selvedge is to roll up the cuff and look for the selvedge ID line running down the outseam. The coloured threads are often distinct for each brand.
The selvedge denim we stock comes in small batches from Japanese mills, plus select American and European makers. We also stock raw or one-wash denim, so the fades are entirely yours: whiskers (“hige”), honeycombs (“hachinosu”), and contrast that develop over months of daily wear. Denim weights range from 12 oz. to 17 oz. (lightweight to heavyweight). Depending on which one you choose, the weight will influence your comfort, break-in time, and fade. Cotton sources, weave patterns, and dyeing methods also matter too. We can walk you through every option and help you narrow it down based on what you want the jeans to do. Need sizing help? Send your waist, rise, thigh, and inseam measurements and we’ll narrow it down before you order online.

FAQ
What's the difference between raw denim and selvedge denim?
Two different things that usually overlap. Raw denim hasn't been washed; it's stiff and dark. Selvedge denim is woven on shuttle looms that create a self-finished edge. We stock denim that is both, but you can have one without the other.
What weight should I start with?
12-15oz is the sweet spot for a first pair. Heavy enough for real fades, light enough for year-round wear. Go heavier once you know you like the process.
How do I care for raw denim?
Wear them as much as possible. Wait 3-6 months before the first wash so fades develop. Before you wash your denim, turn it inside out. Use cold water and minimal laundry soap, and then hang dry. Do not put them in the dryer. Spot-clean between washes as necessary. For more in-depth details, read our blog on denim care tips.
