UES MFG.CO.’s 652531 No. 7 Yarn Dyed Indigo T-Shirt brings one of the most interesting aspects of raw denim into a heavyweight cotton T-shirt. The jersey is knitted from thick No. 7 single yarn that has been rope dyed in indigo before the fabric is produced. Rope dyeing allows the indigo to concentrate around the exterior of the yarn while leaving its core relatively white, creating considerably more potential for contrast as the surface colour gradually wears away.

The No. 7 yarn is particularly substantial, producing a heavier fabric than UES’s well known No. 8 Slub Nep T-shirts. In traditional yarn numbering, the lower number indicates a thicker yarn, so the No. 7 construction gives the shirt a dense, durable hand while remaining comfortable enough for regular wear. UES specifically chose the heavier yarn because it produces a more pronounced and irregular fade than its finer No. 16 yarn dyed indigo T-shirts.

Because the yarn itself is dyed before being knitted, the ageing will be very different from a T-shirt that has simply been garment dyed after construction. Repeated washing and friction gradually remove indigo from the exterior of each yarn, exposing more of the lighter cotton underneath. The collar, shoulder seams, sleeve edges and areas that repeatedly fold or rub against the body should develop the strongest variation, eventually creating a range of blues across the surface.

Producing a jersey like this is unusually difficult because indigo yarn readily transfers colour onto knitting equipment, limiting the number of factories willing or able to work with it. That makes the 652531 more than simply a heavyweight blue T-shirt. It combines the simplicity of an everyday crewneck with the same rope dyed yarn concept responsible for the fading characteristics of raw denim, giving the garment considerably more character the longer it is worn.

Fabric & Care: Made from 100% cotton jersey knitted from thick No. 7 single yarn that has been rope dyed in indigo. The dye remains concentrated around the exterior of the yarn while the core stays relatively white, allowing progressively stronger contrast to develop as the surface indigo wears away. Indigo transfer is expected, particularly while the shirt is new, so avoid contact with light coloured garments and upholstery. Wash separately in cold water and hang dry. The garment has been one washed, so little additional shrinkage should be expected with proper care.

Fit: Cut in UES’s typically slim T-shirt silhouette. The substantial jersey has more body than a conventional lightweight tee, while the one wash treatment means the dimensions are already relatively stable. UES sizing generally runs smaller than typical North American sizing, so we recommend comparing our garment measurements with a T-shirt you already own before selecting your size.
