Pure Blue Japan’s KS-15oz-013 takes inspiration from traditional Japanese Kasuri textiles and translates that irregular character into a 15oz selvedge denim. Instead of chasing a perfectly uniform indigo surface, PBJ combines yarns with variations in both colour and thickness, creating natural streaks and tonal shifts throughout the fabric.

Kasuri is a traditional Japanese textile technique known for the irregular patterns created through variations in dyed yarn before weaving. Pure Blue Japan takes inspiration from that visual character rather than simply reproducing a traditional Kasuri pattern. The result is a denim with naturally shifting indigo tones and subtle vertical striping that becomes more apparent the closer you look.

The denim is woven from 100% cotton on old-fashioned power looms, which contribute significantly to its character. By carefully controlling the weaving process, PBJ creates a fabric with a firm hand and pronounced roughness rather than the smooth, uniform surface of modern mass-produced denim. The variations in yarn thickness add another layer of texture across the face.

At 15oz, the fabric has enough weight to feel substantial without moving into true heavyweight territory. When new, there is a noticeable firmness and texture to the denim, but the One Wash treatment has already softened the fabric and settled the weave. It makes the jeans considerably easier to wear from the beginning while preserving the irregular character that makes this denim interesting.

The different shades and thicknesses of yarn also give the fabric a distinctive foundation for ageing. Rather than beginning as one completely uniform field of indigo, the surface already contains subtle variations in colour and texture. With repeated wear and washing, those differences should become increasingly visible as raised areas experience more abrasion and the indigo gradually develops around individual wear patterns.

Construction remains firmly rooted in classic five pocket denim. Iron buttons and copper rivets provide the hardware, complementing the traditional character of the fabric. The selvedge construction reinforces the vintage loom approach behind the denim, while Pure Blue Japan’s familiar detailing keeps the jeans immediately recognizable as one of the brand’s own fabrics.

The 013 Slim Tapered fit gives the Kasuri denim a clean, narrow silhouette. It is cut relatively slim throughout the upper block before continuing to taper toward the hem, creating a noticeably trimmer shape than the 019 Relaxed Tapered version. The result works particularly well for anyone who wants the texture of PBJ’s more unusual denim without the additional room of their relaxed fits.

The KS-15oz-013 is ultimately about variation. Differences in yarn thickness, indigo tone and loom tension all contribute to a fabric that feels intentionally imperfect from the beginning. Those irregularities provide the starting point, and continued wear should gradually make the Kasuri-inspired character even more apparent.

Fabric & Shrinkage: Made from 15oz 100% cotton Kasuri selvedge denim using yarns with variations in colour and thickness to create its naturally streaked appearance. The old-fashioned loom construction gives the denim a firm hand and pronounced surface texture. The jeans are One Wash, taking care of the primary initial shrinkage and softening the fabric before wear. Wash cold with similar dark colours and hang dry.

Fit: PBJ’s 013 Slim Tapered fit has a clean and relatively slim silhouette throughout, tapering further as it approaches the hem. It is noticeably trimmer through the top block and leg than the 019 Relaxed Tapered version.
