The Flat Head FN-SNR-101LSP takes the brand’s signature block check flannel and gives it an entirely different ageing potential through the use of indigo rope-dyed yarn. Rather than remaining relatively consistent in colour, this special version is designed to fade, pucker and develop increasingly pronounced contrast the more it is worn.

The 100% cotton flannel is woven in Japan on vintage shuttle looms using indigo rope-dyed yarn. Like traditional rope-dyed denim, the process leaves the centre of the yarn relatively undyed. As the surface indigo gradually wears away, lighter blue tones begin to emerge and the block check pattern becomes increasingly defined. The Flat Head even maintains dedicated production equipment for the fabric because of the potential for indigo transfer during weaving and finishing.

The interior is densely brushed, creating a soft surface that traps air and adds warmth without taking away from the structure of the exterior. The result is a substantial flannel that works particularly well through fall and winter, either on its own or layered beneath a jacket.

Construction is equally considered. Major seams use double-needle chainstitched rolled construction for strength, while also allowing puckering to develop around the seams as the shirt ages. Triangular side gussets reinforce the hem, and durable urea cat’s-eye buttons reference the hardware traditionally found on vintage work and military garments.

The Flat Head also carefully pattern matches the block check across areas such as the front body and curved rear yoke, a small detail that becomes particularly noticeable with a large-scale check like this.

Finished with a one-wash treatment, the FN-SNR-101LSP is one of the more unusual versions of The Flat Head’s classic flannel. The combination of indigo rope dyeing, shuttle-loomed fabric and workwear construction means the shirt will change considerably with wear, gradually shifting from deep indigo toward increasingly varied shades of blue.
