The Big John Yoshi Denim Wild Duck Jeans combine the brand’s long history of Japanese denim production with a particularly interesting approach to locally sourced materials. Developed as part of Big John’s Green Label project, the denim incorporates reed fibres harvested from Lake Kojima in Okayama, blending a material that was previously being discarded with traditional cotton denim.

Each year, reeds growing around Lake Kojima are cut as part of efforts to manage the local environment. Rather than allowing that material to go to waste, Big John selected the reeds for processing into a strong plant-based fibre suitable for denim production. The resulting fabric is composed of 94% cotton and 6% reed fibre, creating a denim that connects directly back to the region where Big John has been producing jeans for generations.

The 13.5oz Japanese selvedge denim retains the rugged texture and long-term aging potential expected from traditional denim while introducing the distinctive reed fibre into the yarn. A green selvedge ID was chosen specifically for the Yoshi Denim project, symbolizing the relationship between the fabric and the natural environment that inspired it.

The M1011RC uses a roomy wide straight silhouette with a deep rise and generous proportions through the thigh and leg. The wider cut gives the fabric plenty of room to drape naturally while maintaining the straightforward proportions of classic five-pocket denim.

Details unique to the Wild Duck series continue throughout the jeans. Green bartacks and buttonhole stitching reference the environmental concept behind the project, while a special Wild Duck leather patch distinguishes the model from Big John’s standard denim lineup. A traditional button fly completes the construction.

Finished with a one-wash treatment and made in Japan, the M1011RC is an unusual piece of Japanese denim that connects fabric development, regional history, and environmental responsibility without losing sight of what makes a great pair of jeans in the first place.
