The Sashiko Stripe Overshirt is one of Outclass’s more fabric-driven pieces, combining Japanese textile production with the straightforward Canadian construction the Toronto brand is known for. Sitting between a substantial shirt and lightweight jacket, it uses a deeply textured sashiko cloth that gives an otherwise simple overshirt considerably more character.

The fabric is a 100% cotton sashiko woven in Japan with a distinctive stripe running through the cloth. Rather than relying on a printed pattern, the stripes are created through the structure of the weave itself. Raised sections of cotton give the surface a dimensional appearance, with the alternating texture becoming more noticeable as light moves across the fabric.

Outclass indigo dyes the fabric before giving the finished garment a wash. This softens the cotton and takes some of the initial intensity out of the indigo, giving the Dark Blue colour a more natural, slightly worn-in appearance from the beginning. It also makes the textured sashiko considerably more comfortable than a completely untreated fabric would be.

There is still plenty of ageing left in the cloth. Indigo will gradually change with repeated wear and washing, particularly around the elbows, cuffs, pocket edges, seams and other areas exposed to regular friction. The raised stripe pattern should make that process especially interesting, as different areas of the woven surface encounter wear at different rates. Outclass notes that some indigo transfer can occur during the first few wears, so it is best to avoid light coloured garments underneath until the excess dye has settled.

Construction is kept practical. Two breast pockets provide the familiar work shirt element, while two lower hand pockets make the piece function properly as an outer layer. Corozo nut buttons add a natural finishing detail without competing with the texture of the fabric, allowing the Japanese sashiko to remain the focus.

The overshirt format makes the heavier woven fabric easy to work into a wardrobe. Wear it buttoned over a tee as a substantial shirt, leave it open as a light jacket or layer it over a lightweight knit as temperatures begin to drop. The Dark Blue indigo works particularly well with ecru, olive, black and faded denim, while the woven stripe gives enough separation to comfortably pair it with jeans.
