The Flat Head FN-HTHL-001 Heavyweight Thermal takes a traditional cold-weather base layer and builds it with the substantial fabric and meticulous construction the brand is known for. Knitted from thick No. 10 single cotton yarn, the fabric has considerably more weight and texture than a conventional thermal while retaining the stretch and comfort that makes this style so versatile.

The fabric uses an elongated honeycomb structure with pronounced peaks and valleys across the surface. Those deeper pockets allow the material to hold more air, improving insulation while giving the thermal its distinctive texture. The knit stretches particularly well across the body for a comfortable, close fit, while remaining more stable vertically to help reduce the lengthwise stretching that can develop with repeated wear.

The Flat Head takes the construction considerably further than a typical thermal. The fabric uses a two-layer knitting technique, with the honeycomb structure staggered between each layer to help prevent openings in the mesh from pulling apart. Both shoulders are reinforced with an additional layer of rib-knit fabric to protect the seams from abrasion, particularly when worn beneath heavier shirts and jackets.

Major seams are sewn flat using a vintage 1960s Union Special four-needle flatseamer. By keeping the seams smooth against the body, the construction reduces bulk and irritation when the thermal is worn directly against the skin. The neckline receives The Flat Head’s signature three-needle construction using No. 20 cotton thread, helping it resist stretching and maintain its shape through years of wear.

Finished in Ivory and one-washed, the FN-HTHL-001 works equally well as a substantial base layer or worn on its own like a lightweight sweater. It is a simple piece on the surface, but the fabric and construction make it considerably more involved than an ordinary thermal.
