Built around one of Japan’s most traditional dyeing methods, this tee from Studio D’Artisan is less about graphics and more about process.

The defining feature is Amami Dorozome (mud dyeing); a centuries-old technique from Amami Oshima. The fabric is first dyed using plant-based tannins from Techi trees, then repeatedly immersed in iron-rich mud, creating a deep, natural brown tone with subtle variation and depth that synthetic dyes can’t replicate.

This process results in a color that sits somewhere between brown and near-black depending on light, with layered undertones that evolve over time. Each piece carries slight irregularities, a direct result of the manual dyeing process.

The base fabric is a 100% cotton jersey, built with a traditional loopwheel-style construction approach, giving it a soft but substantial feel with long-term durability.

It’s a simple piece on the surface, but the kind of simplicity that only works when the material and process are doing all the heavy lifting.
