TCB - 11oz Handyman Pants Denim OW

TCB’s Handyman Pants reach back to a more specialized piece of American workwear, the apron front overalls worn by tradesmen during the 1930s.

The defining feature is the integrated apron built directly into the front of the overalls. Rather than simply adding another pocket, the apron creates an additional layer of storage that could be used for tools and hardware while working. It is a detail rarely seen on modern overalls, partly because of the additional time and sewing skill required to construct it properly.

TCB builds the Handyman from an 11oz denim made using a blend of 80% Texas cotton and 20% high grade combed cotton sourced from around the Mississippi region. At 11oz, the fabric is lighter and easier wearing than the heavyweight denim most people associate with Japanese jeans, which makes sense for a garment originally designed around movement and physical work.

The lighter denim also gives the Handyman a more traditional workwear character. It starts with plenty of texture and will continue to soften, fade and develop through regular wear and washing.

Construction follows the utility driven nature of the original 1930s overalls, with the front apron complemented by double knee construction and workwear pocketing. The result is a genuinely functional piece rather than a conventional pair of jeans dressed up with carpenter details.

TCB describes the Handyman as one of its flagship models. Producing an apron front overall requires considerably more complicated sewing than a standard five pocket jean, and it is exactly the sort of unusual vintage garment that makes sense coming from a company that is both a denim brand and an operating sewing factory.

The Handyman Pants come one washed, taking care of the initial shrinkage and leaving the denim ready to wear and break in from the start.

Fabric & Shrinkage: The Handyman Pants are sold one washed, and TCB’s published measurements are taken after shrinkage. The majority of the initial shrinkage has therefore already been addressed. As with any cotton denim, some minor additional shrinkage can still occur with washing and especially machine drying.
