Big John - "Rare" Shrink-to-Fit Straight Jeans OW [R008]

The R008 sits at the top of Big John’s denim program. Part of the RARE collection, it brings together proprietary Japanese selvedge denim, traditional construction and small details designed with longevity and aging in mind.

At the centre is Big John’s BG7055 RARE denim, a substantial 15.5oz selvedge woven exclusively for the collection. The fabric uses Big John’s original BJ-1 cotton yarn and is dyed with pure indigo, producing a deep colour with plenty of character to develop through wear.

One of the more distinctive details is the unusually narrow selvedge. At approximately 8mm wide with a brown ID, it gives the outseam a cleaner appearance while creating a subtle detail unique to the RARE series.

Construction is equally considered. Big John makes extensive use of single-needle lockstitch sewing, a slower method of construction that reflects the attention given to the RARE line. Vintage-style iron buttons are designed to oxidize and develop patina, while leather reinforcement behind the buttons and rivets helps distribute stress and prevent the hardware from pulling through the denim. Even the heavyweight pocket bags are specific to the collection, finished with RARE and Sakamoto Denim stamps.

The R008 is cut in a classic straight fit with a medium rise and a balanced leg that is neither particularly slim nor overly wide. It is a traditional silhouette that puts the focus firmly on the fabric and how it develops over time.

This version has been one washed, taking care of the majority of the initial shrinkage associated with the original rigid shrink-to-fit denim while retaining the character and fading potential of the BG7055 fabric.

Fabric & Shrinkage: Big John’s BG7055 is a 15.5oz shrink-to-fit selvedge denim developed specifically for the RARE collection. This pair has already been one washed, taking care of the majority of the denim’s initial shrinkage. Some additional movement can still occur depending on how the jeans are washed and dried. Wash cold and hang dry to minimize further shrinkage.

Fit: A classic straight silhouette with a medium rise and a balanced amount of room through the leg. Neither particularly slim nor overly wide, the R008 is Big John’s traditional straight fit within the RARE collection.
