Imogene + Willie - Hickory Stripe Utility Coat

Imogene + Willie’s Utility Coat takes one of the most familiar fabrics in American workwear and gives it a softer, more lived in approach.

The coat is built from a 10oz, 100% cotton hickory stripe fabric woven in Japan. Traditionally associated with railroad and industrial workwear, hickory stripe earned its reputation as a practical fabric that could stand up to hard use while doing a good job of disguising dirt and wear.

Imogene + Willie were initially hesitant to work with hickory stripe because of how familiar the fabric has become within heritage clothing. What changed their mind was the combination of this particular Japanese fabric with their Utility Coat silhouette.

Rather than leaving the hickory stripe crisp and untouched, Imogene + Willie tint the fabric before washing the finished garment down. The process softens both the colour and hand, giving the coat the character of something that has already seen some wear without trying to artificially distress it.

The Utility Coat itself is simple and functional. Three exterior patch pockets provide plenty of everyday storage, while an additional interior chest pocket keeps smaller items secure. A copper rivet placket adds another subtle workwear detail to the front.

The fit is relaxed enough to work as an outer layer without becoming oversized. Imogene + Willie describes it as true to size, making your normal size the best starting point.

At 10oz, the Japanese cotton has enough substance to function as a proper work jacket while remaining light enough for layering through much of the year.

Fabric & Care: The Japanese hickory stripe fabric has already been tinted and washed to soften its colour and hand. Imogene + Willie does not describe this fabric as raw, rigid or shrink to fit, so we would not recommend treating it as such.

Fit: Imogene + Willie describes the Utility Coat as fitting true to size. Take your normal size for the intended relaxed fit and enough room for light layering.
