Indigofera - Buck 14oz Tapered Gunpowder Black Selvedge Jeans

The Buck is Indigofera’s relaxed tapered jean, combining a medium to high rise with extra room through the seat and thigh before tapering gradually through the lower leg. This version is made from the brand’s distinctive 14oz Gunpowder Black Japanese selvedge denim, a fabric developed to give black denim the kind of ageing potential normally associated with a well worn pair of indigo jeans.

Gunpowder is a 100% cotton Japanese selvedge denim constructed with both a black warp and black weft. The name is more than just a reference to the colour. The dye formulation incorporates charcoal, saltpetre and sulphur, ingredients traditionally associated with gunpowder. The process produces an unusually deep black colour with a subtle sheen when the denim is new.

What makes the fabric particularly interesting is what happens after that initial black begins to change. The rope dye does not completely penetrate the core of the warp yarn, allowing the lighter cotton underneath to gradually become visible as the surface wears away. Instead of the blue and white contrast of traditional indigo denim, Gunpowder develops through a spectrum of charcoal, dusty grey and eventually much lighter tones around creases and high wear areas.

At 14oz, the fabric has enough structure to feel substantial without moving into heavyweight denim territory. This version is raw and sanforized, so it arrives dark, crisp and largely untouched. The denim will begin moulding to the wearer as it breaks in, with the most pronounced changes developing around the lap, pockets, knees, hems and other areas exposed to regular friction.

Traditional five pocket construction keeps the focus on the denim. Indigofera finishes the Buck with a button fly, branded iron buttons, copper rivets, a half lined rear pocket and an offset rear belt loop. A red selvedge ID provides a small flash of contrast against the otherwise black construction when the cuff is turned up.

The Buck fit works particularly well with the 14oz Gunpowder fabric. There is comfortable room through the top block and thigh, followed by a gentle taper below the knee. It avoids the restrictive feeling of a slim tapered jean while still giving the lower leg a cleaner shape than Indigofera’s Clint regular straight fit.

For someone who likes watching raw denim evolve but already has enough indigo in the rotation, Gunpowder offers a completely different version of the same process. The fabric starts almost uniformly black and gradually reveals its construction through wear, producing a pair of jeans that should look considerably different after a year than they did on day one.

Fabric & Shrinkage: Made from 14oz 100% cotton Japanese selvedge denim. The Gunpowder fabric is raw but sanforized, meaning the majority of the fabric’s potential shrinkage has already been controlled before construction. Some minor movement can still occur with the first wash, particularly through the inseam. Wash cold and hang dry to minimize additional shrinkage and preserve the dark black colour for longer.

The leg begins tapering below the knee for a cleaner lower profile without becoming overly slim.
