Knickerbocker - Stadium Peat Crew Sweater
Description
Knickerbocker’s Stadium Loft Knit Crew in Peat approaches the classic athletic sweatshirt by concentrating on the elements that actually make a simple crewneck worth wearing repeatedly, the quality of the cotton, the construction of the fleece, the proportions and the way the garment becomes more comfortable as it settles in. Made from a 10.3 oz brushed cotton fleece knitted in Portugal, it has considerably more substance than a lightweight modern sweatshirt without moving into the extremely heavy territory that can make a crewneck difficult to layer.
The fabric is made entirely from cotton using dual ring spun, combed cotton yarns. Ring spinning twists the cotton fibres into a tighter and more consistent yarn, creating a smoother and stronger foundation for the finished knit. Combing takes that process a step further by removing shorter fibres and impurities before spinning, leaving predominantly longer cotton fibres behind. It is a more considered approach to what initially looks like a very straightforward sweatshirt fabric.
Once knitted, the fleece is brushed to raise fibres along the interior surface. This creates the soft, slightly lofty texture traditionally associated with athletic fleece while also helping the fabric retain warmth. Rather than relying on additional synthetic insulation, the warmth comes from the structure and density of the cotton itself. At 10.3 oz, there is enough material here to give the sweatshirt a substantial hand while still allowing it to move naturally with the wearer.
Knickerbocker refers to this fabric as its Loft Knit, an evolution of the standard fleece previously used throughout its sportswear. The idea is relatively simple, retain the softness and familiar construction of a traditional cotton sweatshirt while adding more weight, warmth and durability. The result sits comfortably between a lighter everyday sweatshirt and the exceptionally dense fleece often associated with reproduction athletic wear.
That balance makes the Stadium particularly versatile. It is substantial enough to wear as a primary layer through cooler weather, but it does not become so bulky that it cannot sit comfortably underneath a denim jacket, chore coat, leather jacket or heavier winter coat. For a wardrobe built around denim and workwear, that middle ground is useful because the sweatshirt can move between seasons rather than being reserved exclusively for the coldest part of the year.
The Peat colour gives the familiar sportswear shape a noticeably different character from traditional heather grey. It is an earthy, muted tone that sits naturally alongside indigo denim, black denim, olive fatigues, brown workwear and neutral outerwear. Because there is very little decoration elsewhere on the garment, the colour and texture of the fleece become a larger part of its identity.
Construction follows the language of traditional athletic clothing. Raglan sleeves extend from the neckline into the underarm rather than meeting the body at a conventional shoulder seam. Historically, raglan construction became common in sportswear because it allowed greater freedom through the shoulder and removed the fixed seam that normally determines exactly where a garment should sit.
On the Stadium Crew, that construction works particularly well with the relaxed fit. The shoulder is allowed to fall naturally depending on the wearer rather than being forced into a sharply defined position. It creates an easier silhouette through the upper body and gives the sweatshirt the slightly relaxed character associated with older athletic garments.
The cuffs and waistband are finished with ribbed knit. Ribbing has a practical purpose on sweatshirts, providing enough stretch for the openings to move comfortably while helping the sleeves and body return to shape afterward. The tighter structure at the cuffs and hem also gives definition to the otherwise relaxed body, preventing the silhouette from feeling overly loose.
There is intentionally very little else competing for attention. No large graphics, unnecessary pockets or complicated construction details are needed to make the piece interesting. Knickerbocker’s approach is closer to refining an established piece of clothing than redesigning it. The familiar crewneck sweatshirt remains recognizable, but the yarn, fabric weight, fit and manufacturing have all been given considerably more consideration than would normally be found in basic sportswear.
The fabric is preshrunk before the garment is finished. This is especially useful with a 100% cotton sweatshirt, where untreated fleece can change noticeably after its first few washes. Preshrinking helps stabilize the material so the garment begins much closer to its intended dimensions. As with any cotton knit, excessive heat should still be avoided if maintaining the original fit is important.
Repeated wear should gradually make the sweatshirt feel even more natural. Cotton fleece tends to soften as the fibres relax through washing and use, while the ribbing settles around the wrists and waist and the body begins to conform more closely to the wearer. The goal is not for the garment to remain perfectly untouched, but to become more comfortable and familiar with time.
It is a good example of Knickerbocker’s broader approach to American sportswear. Rather than reproducing a particular vintage sweatshirt stitch for stitch, the brand takes the underlying idea and rebuilds it through better fabric, considered proportions and Portuguese manufacturing. The result feels rooted in older athletic clothing without becoming a costume or reproduction piece.
For something as simple as a crewneck, that restraint is what makes the Stadium work. The interest is in the hand of the fleece, the way the raglan sleeves sit, the muted Peat colour and the way a substantial cotton sweatshirt works into an everyday rotation. It is designed to be the kind of piece that gets pulled on without much thought, then gets better simply because it is worn often.

Fabric & Care: Made from 100% cotton 10.3 oz brushed fleece knitted in Portugal using dual ring spun, combed cotton yarns. The brushed interior raises the cotton fibres to create additional softness and loft, while the weight of the knit gives the sweatshirt enough structure to work as either a primary layer or underneath heavier outerwear. The fabric has been preshrunk to help reduce dimensional change during laundering. Wash cold and tumble dry low. Avoid excessive heat if maintaining the original fit and character of the cotton fleece is important.
Fit: Cut with a relaxed sportswear inspired silhouette and raglan sleeves that allow the shoulder to fall naturally rather than relying on a fixed shoulder seam. There is enough room through the body for comfortable movement and layering without turning the sweatshirt into an oversized piece. We recommend using our garment measurements and comparing them with a sweatshirt you already own before choosing your size.
