Orgueil - Flip Up Sunglasses Dark Grey [OR-7358D]

Orgueil’s Flip Up Sunglasses take a piece of old school functional eyewear and turn it into something that fits naturally alongside the brand’s early twentieth century tailoring and workwear influences. The OR-7358D uses a classic Boston style frame with a hinged front lens assembly, allowing the lenses to be flipped upward without removing the glasses.

The frame is handmade in Sabae, Fukui, an area of Japan internationally recognized for its eyewear manufacturing. Rather than treating the glasses as a simple accessory, Orgueil approaches them with the same attention to material and construction found throughout its clothing. The substantial frame is made from acetate, a plant derived material traditionally favoured for quality eyewear because of its durability, depth of colour and ability to be shaped and polished.

The Boston silhouette gives the frame much of its character. Its rounded, slightly inverted triangular lens shape has roots in classic American eyewear and provides a softer alternative to a square Wellington style frame. Orgueil keeps that vintage character intact while adjusting the proportions for a comfortable contemporary fit.

What really separates the OR-7358D is the flip up construction. The entire front rim and lens assembly is attached to a mechanical hinge above the bridge, allowing it to be raised while the main frame remains in place. Originally practical for moving between different viewing conditions, it is an unusual piece of eyewear engineering that also gives the glasses a distinctly vintage character.

Small details continue throughout the frame. Decorative metal hardware sits alongside the lenses, while the inside of the temples carries ORGUEIL branding along with PRODUCED BY ELMWOODS. The substantial acetate construction and exposed flip mechanism give the glasses a little more presence than a conventional lightweight sunglass frame without becoming overly ornate.

The Dark Grey colour keeps everything relatively understated. It works easily with denim, leather and heavier workwear but is refined enough to sit alongside the tailored side of Orgueil as well. With the lenses down they read as a classic pair of Japanese made sunglasses. Flip them up and the mechanical construction becomes the defining detail.

Materials & Care: Constructed from acetate with a mechanical flip up front. Acetate is durable but should still be protected from excessive heat, which can affect the shape of the frame. Clean the lenses with a proper eyewear cloth and store the glasses in their case when not in use. Avoid forcing the flip mechanism beyond its normal range of movement.

Fit: The OR-7358D uses a rounded Boston style frame with softer lines than a conventional square sunglass. The proportions were developed with Japanese facial shapes in mind while retaining the vintage character of the original Boston silhouette.
