The Sashiko Blanket Overshirt is Outclass’s take on a substantial shirt jacket, combining Japanese textile production with the clean, understated construction the Toronto brand is known for. Sitting somewhere between a shirt and lightweight jacket, it is built with enough structure to stand on its own while retaining the ease and versatility of an overshirt.

The real focus is the fabric. Outclass uses a 100% cotton Japanese sashiko woven with a distinctive plaid pattern. The raised woven structure gives the cloth considerably more depth than a conventional flat cotton, with the repeating sashiko pattern creating texture across the entire garment. It has a substantial, almost blanket-like hand that gives this overshirt its name.

The fabric is indigo dyed and then garment washed after construction. That wash softens the cotton and takes some of the initial intensity out of the colour, leaving the Light Blue version with a more relaxed, broken-in appearance from the beginning. The dimensional sashiko weave creates subtle variations in the way the indigo appears across the surface, particularly as light catches the raised sections of the fabric.

That character should continue developing with wear. Indigo dyed cotton naturally changes around areas exposed to repeated friction and washing, while the textured sashiko construction gives the surface even more opportunity to evolve. Rather than remaining perfectly uniform, the overshirt should gradually become softer and more individual as the colour settles and the fabric conforms to the wearer.

Construction is practical and deliberately straightforward. Two breast pockets provide the traditional work shirt element, while two lower hand pockets make the garment considerably more useful as an outer layer. Corozo nut buttons keep the detailing natural and understated, allowing the Japanese fabric to remain the main visual feature.

The overshirt format also makes the weight easier to work into a wardrobe. It can be worn buttoned over a tee like a heavier shirt or left open as a light jacket. The slightly more substantial sashiko fabric gives it enough presence to work over denim, chinos or fatigue pants without feeling overly formal or precious.
