Pure Blue Japan - 14oz Natural Used Wash Regular Straight Black [USED-003-BK]

Pure Blue Japan’s USED-003-BK takes the brand’s classic 14oz black selvedge denim and does most of the initial ageing for you. Rather than the uniform appearance of a new black jean, these receive PBJ’s Natural Used Wash, creating the softened colour, pronounced seams and subtle highs and lows you would normally expect after years of wear.

The foundation is a 14oz 100% cotton Japanese selvedge denim with a sulphur-dyed black warp and natural white weft. Woven at low tension, the fabric retains the irregularity and texture that Pure Blue Japan is known for while remaining considerably more approachable than some of the brand’s heavier and more aggressively slubbed fabrics. Turn up the cuff and the contrast between the black face and lighter interior becomes immediately visible.

The black warp is particularly important to how these jeans age. Sulphur dye produces a deep black when new but is designed to gradually lose colour through abrasion, washing and everyday wear. Because the weft remains natural, the denim has a lighter foundation underneath the black surface, allowing increasingly visible grey and white tones to emerge as the warp continues to fade.

For the Natural Used Wash, the denim is carefully distressed by hand in Japan to reproduce the appearance of a well worn pair. The treatment creates lighter areas through the thighs and other points of natural friction while emphasizing puckering and contrast around the seams. The result feels convincingly broken in rather than uniformly faded, with variation throughout the denim that gives each pair character from the beginning.

The wash also changes the way these feel on day one. Instead of the stiffness associated with a new pair of raw 14oz jeans, the denim arrives softer and more settled. The primary shrinkage has already been taken care of, making sizing more predictable while still leaving plenty of opportunity for the black denim to continue changing with your own wear.

Construction remains rooted in traditional five pocket denim. A button fly, hidden rear pocket rivets, raised belt loops and chainstitch construction provide the familiar heritage details, while Pure Blue Japan finishes the jeans with custom hardware, a leather patch and its signature embroidered indigofera leaf on the rear pocket.

The Regular Straight fit is one of PBJ’s most traditional silhouettes. It provides a comfortable rise with room through the seat and thigh before continuing into a balanced straight leg. There is no aggressive taper through the lower half, giving the jeans a classic shape that works particularly well with the softer, already worn-in character of the Natural Used Wash.

For anyone who appreciates the way black denim looks after years of wear but does not necessarily want to start from a completely raw pair, the USED-003-BK gets you much closer from the beginning. The wash establishes the initial character, while the sulphur-dyed black denim will continue to fade and develop around your own wear patterns over time.
