Pure Blue Japan - Double Indigo Sashiko Relaxed Tapered Jeans [1170-2-ID]

Pure Blue Japan’s 1170-2-ID takes the familiar five pocket jean and replaces conventional denim with one of the brand’s most distinctive fabrics. Made from a 12.5oz sashiko cloth in Indigo x Indigo, these have the texture and ageing potential associated with PBJ while looking noticeably different from a traditional pair of jeans.

The fabric is 100% cotton and woven with a jacquard process to create the raised sashiko pattern directly within the cloth. Sashiko has its roots in traditional Japanese textile reinforcement and repair, where repeated running stitches were used to strengthen fabric. Here, PBJ recreates that distinctive visual texture through the construction of the fabric itself rather than applying decorative stitching over a conventional denim.

This version uses indigo yarn for both the warp and weft, giving the fabric its Double Indigo appearance. Instead of the strong contrast created by a conventional indigo warp and white weft denim, the 1170-2-ID begins with a much deeper and more tonal blue throughout. The raised sashiko weave remains immediately visible, but the Indigo x Indigo construction gives the overall fabric a rich, saturated appearance when new.

The combination becomes particularly interesting with wear. As the indigo gradually loses colour around areas of repeated movement and friction, the uneven sashiko surface becomes increasingly pronounced. Raised portions of the weave encounter abrasion differently from the recessed sections, allowing the texture and pattern to become more visible as the pants age. It creates a completely different fading experience from a conventional smooth faced denim.

At 12.5oz, the sashiko has enough substance to hold its shape while remaining soft and relatively supple. Pure Blue Japan describes the fabric as having a flexible hand, making it considerably easier to wear from the beginning than many of the brand’s heavier denim fabrics. The pants are also one washed, taking care of the primary initial shrinkage and further softening the fabric before wear.

Construction follows a traditional five pocket jean format, keeping the unusual fabric grounded in something familiar. Iron buttons and copper rivets provide the hardware, while PBJ finishes the jeans with its signature leaf embroidery and leather patch. Cotton thread sewing continues the vintage influenced construction throughout the garment.

The Relaxed Tapered fit provides considerably more room through the upper half than PBJ’s slimmer cuts. The rise is slightly deeper, with comfortable space through the seat and thighs before the leg begins a pronounced taper toward the hem. It gives you the comfort of a roomier top block without carrying excessive width through the lower leg.

For anyone who already owns a few pairs of traditional selvedge jeans, the 1170-2-ID offers something genuinely different. You still get the fading, texture and long term evolution that make Pure Blue Japan fabrics interesting, but the 12.5oz Double Indigo sashiko gives that process an entirely different surface to work with.

Fit: Pure Blue Japan’s Relaxed Tapered fit has a slightly deeper rise with additional room through the seat and thighs before tapering strongly from the knee toward the hem. It provides a comfortable top block while maintaining a clean, relatively narrow lower leg.
