Pure Blue Japan’s 2235-BR starts with a traditional check shirt and takes it in a much more interesting direction through fabric and dye. Rather than weaving the final colour directly into the cloth, PBJ begins with a brown-based cotton tweed check, constructs the shirt and then hand over-dyes the completed garment in indigo. The original check remains visible underneath, but the indigo brings the colours together into a much deeper and more layered surface.

The fabric is 100% cotton with a soft, brushed hand and the slightly irregular texture you would expect from a tweed-inspired weave. Using cotton rather than traditional wool gives PBJ the ability to work with indigo while keeping the shirt comfortable and versatile enough to wear across a much wider range of temperatures. There is enough substance to work as a light layer, but it remains soft enough to wear comfortably as a shirt.

What really makes the 2235-BR interesting is the relationship between the original brown check and the indigo over-dye. Because the garment is dyed after it has already been sewn, the indigo settles across the fabric, seams and construction as a whole. The brown base remains underneath, creating subtle differences in tone rather than the cleaner, more uniform appearance of a conventional indigo check.

That layered colour should become considerably more apparent with wear. As the indigo gradually fades around the collar, cuffs, seams, elbows and other high-friction areas, more of the original brown check will begin to show through. Instead of simply fading from dark blue to light blue, the shirt has an underlying colour palette waiting beneath the indigo, giving it the potential to develop a much more complex patina over time.

PBJ keeps the construction rooted in classic workwear. A single chest pocket keeps the front relatively clean, while black Japanese urea buttons complement the deep indigo colour without introducing unnecessary contrast. Side gussets reinforce the hem, and chainstitch construction with visible runoff adds another traditional work shirt detail.

The silhouette is balanced rather than aggressively slim, giving the textured fabric enough room to sit naturally on the body. It works easily as a standalone shirt but has enough substance to wear open over a tee as a light overshirt. The combination of brown, indigo and the softened check also makes it particularly easy to pair with ecru, olive, black or faded denim.

Like many of Pure Blue Japan’s best fabrics, the real appeal is not just how the shirt looks new. The brown cotton tweed, brushed surface and hand-applied indigo over-dye are all designed to become more visible and individual as the garment is worn. What begins as a dark, subdued check should gradually reveal considerably more contrast and texture over time.

Expect the indigo to gradually lighten around high-friction areas while more of the original brown check becomes visible underneath. Wash cold with similar dark colours and hang dry. Indigo transfer may occur while the garment is new.
