Pure Blue Japan - Woven Organic Cotton Paisley Jacquard Open Collar Shirt [2241-1]

Pure Blue Japan’s 2241-1 takes a classic open collar summer shirt and builds it around a fabric with considerably more going on beneath the surface. Made from organic cotton, the shirt uses jacquard weaving to create its paisley pattern directly within the cloth before the finished garment is dyed in indigo. The result is a shirt where pattern, texture and colour will all continue to change together with wear.

Unlike a printed paisley, the pattern here is physically woven into the fabric. Jacquard weaving allows different sections of yarn to form the design as the cloth is produced, creating subtle changes in height and texture across the surface. From a distance the paisley remains relatively understated, particularly beneath the deep indigo colour, but up close the woven construction gives the fabric a much more dimensional appearance.

After construction, the shirt is garment dyed in indigo. Dyeing the completed garment allows the colour to settle into the textured jacquard surface differently than it would on a completely flat fabric. The initial colour is a deep, relatively uniform indigo, allowing the woven paisley to appear and disappear depending on the light and how closely the fabric is viewed.

The real appeal will be seeing what happens after the shirt begins to age. Indigo gradually loses colour anywhere the fabric encounters repeated friction, movement and washing. On a jacquard cloth, those changes should become particularly interesting as the raised portions of the paisley pattern experience wear differently from the recessed areas. The pattern should become increasingly pronounced as the indigo softens through different shades of blue.

The construction itself is intentionally uncomplicated. A relaxed open collar gives the shirt the feel of vintage vacation and summer shirting, while short sleeves and a single chest pocket keep the silhouette clean. Black urea buttons blend naturally into the darker indigo when new, and chainstitch construction continues PBJ’s workwear influenced approach to garment construction.

The more relaxed body is also a departure from some of Pure Blue Japan’s trimmer work shirts. This is intended to be an easy warm weather piece, with enough room to wear comfortably on its own or open over a tee. The lightweight organic cotton and open collar make it particularly well suited to warmer days without losing the fabric character PBJ is known for.

It is a good example of Pure Blue Japan moving beyond denim while still applying the same ideas that make its jeans interesting. Instead of relying on a graphic or surface print, the paisley comes from the construction of the fabric itself, while indigo provides the ageing potential. What begins as a subtle dark indigo shirt should become considerably more expressive the longer it is worn.

Fabric & Care: Made from 100% organic cotton with the paisley pattern woven directly into the fabric using a jacquard construction. The completed garment is dyed in indigo, giving the textured surface substantial ageing potential. Expect the colour to gradually lighten around the collar, seams, pocket, shoulders and other areas exposed to repeated friction. Wash cold with similar dark colours and hang dry. Indigo transfer may occur, particularly while the shirt is new.

Fit: Designed with a relaxed open collar silhouette and a looser body than many of Pure Blue Japan’s traditional work shirts. Because PBJ sizing can vary considerably between styles, we recommend using our garment measurements and comparing them with a shirt you already own before choosing your size.
