Pure Blue Japan’s LS-2244-2 takes the familiar gingham check shirt in a much more interesting direction, using the brand’s original seersucker fabric woven with two different shades of indigo. The result is a lightweight work shirt that has plenty of texture from the beginning, with a dark and light indigo check that will continue to change as the shirt is worn and washed.

Seersucker gets its distinctive character from the puckered surface of the cloth. Rather than sitting completely flat against the body, alternating sections of the fabric create a naturally uneven texture with small channels for air to circulate. It is a construction traditionally associated with warm weather clothing, and here PBJ uses that practicality as the foundation for one of its more unusual indigo fabrics.

Instead of producing the gingham pattern with conventional dyed yarns, Pure Blue Japan uses two different shades of indigo. The contrast between the dark and light yarns creates the check while maintaining the depth and variation that make indigo fabrics so interesting. Up close, the combination of colour and the irregular seersucker surface gives the fabric considerably more dimension than a standard flat woven gingham.

The use of indigo also means the pattern will not remain static. Both shades can gradually soften and change through repeated wear and washing, particularly around the collar, cuffs, seams and other high friction areas. Over time, the difference between the two indigo tones should continue evolving alongside the puckered surface of the cloth, giving each shirt a more individual appearance.

PBJ keeps the construction rooted in workwear. The shirt uses two asymmetric chest pockets, including a smaller cigarette or pen pocket detail, giving the front a slightly irregular appearance without overwhelming the gingham pattern. Fabric-covered buttons continue the same idea, blending into the indigo check rather than introducing contrasting hardware.

Despite those workwear details, this is a particularly easy PBJ shirt to wear through warmer weather. The lightweight seersucker breathes well, while the dark and light indigo gingham gives it enough character to work with simple chinos, ecru denim or faded jeans. It can be worn buttoned as a shirt or left open over a tee as a light layer.

It is a good example of what Pure Blue Japan does particularly well. The basic idea is familiar, but the fabric changes everything. Seersucker texture, two shades of indigo and a traditional gingham pattern come together in a shirt that should become more interesting rather than less as it ages.
