Pure Blue Japan - Chambray Short Sleeve Used Wash Shirt [SS-2243-UW]

Pure Blue Japan’s SS-2243-UW takes a traditional indigo chambray work shirt and gives it a much more developed finish from the start. Built from lightweight cotton chambray and treated with an extensive Used Wash, the shirt has the faded, uneven colour of something that has already spent years being worn rather than the uniform appearance of a new indigo shirt.

The fabric is 100% cotton chambray, a classic workwear cloth constructed with contrasting warp and weft yarns to create its characteristic depth and slightly mottled appearance. PBJ pushes that character further through the Used Wash treatment, fading the indigo unevenly across the garment. The result has an almost ombré quality, with areas of deeper indigo sitting alongside noticeably lighter sections of blue.

That variation is intentional and is what makes this version particularly interesting. Rather than trying to make every part of the shirt perfectly uniform, PBJ uses the wash to emphasize the natural irregularity of chambray. Seams, edges and areas of greater exposure take on different shades, creating the appearance of a well worn vintage work shirt while retaining the strength and structure of a newly made garment.

There is still room for the shirt to continue changing. The Used Wash has already done much of the initial fading, but the remaining indigo will continue to soften through wear and washing. High friction areas around the collar, pocket edges, sleeves and seams should gradually develop additional variation, allowing the factory wash to become the starting point rather than the finished appearance.

Construction stays rooted in classic workwear. Two asymmetrical chest pockets give the front its distinctive PBJ look, while fabric covered chambray buttons keep the detailing tonal rather than introducing contrasting hardware. Gusseted hems reinforce the side seams, with Pure Blue Japan’s signature embroidered leaf appearing at the left gusset.

The short sleeve cut works particularly well with the lightweight chambray. It has enough visual character to stand on its own through warmer weather without relying on a print or graphic, while the faded indigo makes it easy to pair with ecru denim, chinos, fatigue pants or darker trousers. Even with blue jeans, the variation in the Used Wash gives enough contrast to keep the combination interesting.

This is Pure Blue Japan doing what it does best outside of denim. The basic work shirt is familiar, but the fabric and finishing make it distinctly PBJ. Lightweight chambray, irregular indigo fading, thoughtful workwear construction and a wash that gives every garment character from day one.

The shirt has already been washed, so only minimal additional shrinkage is expected. The remaining indigo will continue to soften and change with wear and future washing. Wash cold with similar colours and hang dry to preserve the fabric and colour.
