Samurai - 10oz "Hisho" Selvedge Western Denim Shirt [SWD-L02]

The Samurai SWD-L02 “Hisho” Western Shirt takes the classic denim pearl snap and gives it the kind of fabric and construction treatment expected from Samurai. Built from the brand’s original 10oz “Katana” selvedge denim, it is light enough to work as a true shirt while still carrying the texture, fading potential and structure of Japanese selvedge denim.

The fabric is woven from irregular No. 10 yarn, giving the surface visible variation rather than the flat appearance of a conventional shirting denim. Samurai keeps the weight at 10oz so the shirt remains wearable through more of the year, while the indigo denim is still substantial enough to crease, soften and develop increasingly pronounced character through regular wear and washing.

“Hisho” is the design that separates the SWD-L02 from Samurai’s other western shirts. The front and rear yokes, along with the chest pockets, use sharp angular stitching intended to evoke the movement and cutting line of a katana. Rather than adding a large graphic, Samurai works that imagery directly into the pattern and construction of the shirt, keeping the overall design clean while still giving it a distinctly Samurai identity.

The western detailing is handled with the same restraint. Square shaped snap buttons are used through the body and cuffs, while the collar is finished with a traditional cat eye nut button. Silver selvedge accents appear throughout the construction, including at the gussets and sleeves, bringing the selvedge itself into the design rather than hiding it inside the garment. Cotton thread is used throughout much of the sewing, with heavy seam work and chainstitch details reinforcing the workwear feel.

The silhouette is intentionally trim and balanced, closer to a classic Japanese western shirt than an oversized overshirt. The one wash treatment removes the majority of the initial shrinkage and begins to soften the denim, while still leaving plenty of room for the fabric to continue breaking in and fading with wear.

The result is a western shirt that feels familiar from a distance but rewards a closer look. Between the irregular 10oz denim, Hisho stitching, selvedge detailing and distinctive hardware, the SWD-L02 is one of those pieces that becomes more interesting the longer it is worn.

Fabric & Care

100% cotton, 10oz Japanese selvedge denim woven from irregular No. 10 yarn.

The denim has a textured, uneven surface that will gradually soften and gain more variation through wear. Expect the indigo to fade through high contact areas, seams and creases while the irregular yarn structure becomes increasingly visible over time.

The shirt has received a one wash treatment, so the majority of the initial shrinkage has already occurred. Some additional settling may still happen depending on water temperature and drying method.

Wash cold with similar dark colours and hang dry. Indigo transfer is expected, particularly when the shirt is new.

Fit

The SWD-L02 is cut relatively close through the chest and body with a clean, balanced silhouette. It is intended to fit more like a traditional western shirt than an oversized denim overshirt.

Samurai sizing typically runs smaller than standard North American sizing, so many customers may prefer to size up depending on the desired fit.
