The Samurai SJSJK26-ARS Indigo Sashiko Lattice Dobby Jacket is built around one of the more unusual fabrics in Samurai’s current collection. Rather than approaching sashiko as a simple decorative texture, Samurai developed an original lattice dobby cloth that combines traditional sashiko weaving with the structural idea behind ripstop fabric, producing a jacket with a heavily raised surface, exceptional tear strength and plenty of character before it has even begun to age.

The colour comes from a blend of natural and conventional indigo. The yarn is dyed in hank form using a traditional kasezome process, allowing the dye to penetrate less uniformly than a modern industrial dyeing method. The result is a deep indigo with a subtle purple cast and natural tonal variation throughout the cloth. As the jacket is worn and washed, that variation becomes increasingly visible while the raised structure of the weave continues to develop.

For the fabric itself, Samurai looked to ripstop, where thicker yarns are periodically incorporated into the weave to help resist tearing. Here, that idea is interpreted through sashiko weaving techniques, creating a pronounced lattice of thick ridges across the surface. The texture is both functional and visual, reinforcing the cloth while giving it a dimensional quality that changes considerably depending on the light.

The jacket is based on a vintage sports jacket rather than a traditional denim trucker. It has a clean, slightly boxy shape with two large rounded waist pockets, an oversized throat latch and a flat hem. Black urea buttons keep the detailing restrained and allow the fabric to remain the main focus. The result lands somewhere between a sports jacket, coach jacket and chore coat, making it easy to wear over a T-shirt or heavier layer.

Samurai specifically designed the fabric and construction with long-term wear in mind. The dense lattice structure provides high tear resistance, while extra-sturdy sewing reinforces the jacket throughout. Because the indigo is applied before weaving, the colour will gradually soften and become more varied with washing, bringing greater definition to the raised sashiko texture over time.

Finished with a one-wash treatment, the major initial shrinkage has already been removed. This is the kind of piece that will look noticeably different after a few seasons of wear, with the combination of indigo, raised lattice structure and repeated washing giving each jacket its own finish.

Fabric & Care

100% cotton Japanese indigo sashiko lattice dobby.

The yarn is hand dyed in hank form using a blend of natural and conventional indigo, creating a deep colour with subtle variation rather than a perfectly uniform finish. The raised sashiko lattice will become increasingly pronounced as the fabric softens and the indigo develops through wear and washing.

The jacket has received a one-wash treatment, so the majority of the initial shrinkage has already occurred. Some additional settling may still happen depending on water temperature and drying method.

Wash cold with similar dark colours and hang dry. Indigo transfer is expected, particularly while the jacket is new.

The pattern provides room through the body for layering, though Samurai’s tagged sizing still runs smaller than most North American brands. Customers will generally want to consider one size larger than their usual North American jacket size.
