The Samurai SSS26-ARSW Indigo Sashiko Lattice Dobby Work Shirt is built around one of the most distinctive fabrics in Samurai’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection. Developed with Japanese artisans specifically for the series, the cloth combines traditional sashiko weaving with a lattice structure inspired by ripstop, creating a work shirt with substantial texture, added tear resistance and an indigo colour that will continue to evolve with wear.

The yarn is dyed using a blend of natural indigo and conventional indigo through a traditional kasezome process. Rather than dyeing yarn continuously, kasezome dyes it in hank form, allowing subtle inconsistencies in penetration and tone to remain. The resulting fabric begins with a deep blue colour that carries a noticeable purple cast, with variation becoming increasingly apparent as the shirt is worn and washed.

Samurai looked to ripstop fabric when developing the weave itself. Ripstop relies on reinforced yarns incorporated at regular intervals to improve resistance to tearing. Samurai translates that idea through sashiko techniques, weaving thicker raised ridges into a repeating lattice pattern. The structure gives the fabric its highly dimensional surface while also serving a functional purpose, creating a cloth that feels considerably more substantial than a conventional shirting fabric.

The shirt itself draws from vintage workwear, with a clean silhouette and rounded dual chest pockets. Triple-needle rolled seams reinforce the major areas of construction, while side gussets are finished with exposed chainstitch runoff. Resin buttons and Samurai’s Union Ticket complete the workwear detailing without distracting from the texture of the fabric.

Private & Co. carries the SSS26-ARSW Western-cut version. Samurai uses the “W” suffix for garments developed specifically for overseas customers, with a slightly larger silhouette than the standard Japanese SSS26-ARS. It retains the clean proportions Samurai intended for the shirt while providing additional room through the body for a more natural fit on North American customers.

The fabric has received a one-wash treatment, taking care of the majority of its initial shrinkage while beginning to soften the densely woven sashiko. With continued wear and washing, expect the indigo to gain more tonal variation and the raised lattice structure to become increasingly pronounced.

Fabric & Care

100% cotton Japanese indigo sashiko lattice dobby.

The yarn is hank dyed using a combination of natural and conventional indigo, producing a deep blue with subtle variation rather than a completely uniform colour. The raised lattice structure will gradually soften with wear while repeated washing brings out greater tonal variation and definition within the sashiko weave.

The shirt has received a one-wash treatment, so the majority of the initial shrinkage has already occurred. Some additional settling may still happen depending on water temperature and drying method.

Wash cold with similar dark colours and hang dry. Indigo transfer is expected, particularly when the garment is new.

The SSS26-ARSW is the international version of Samurai’s SSS26-ARS. Samurai’s “W” designation indicates a Western cut with slightly larger proportions than the standard Japanese-market pattern, making it better suited to overseas sizing while maintaining the clean overall shape of the original shirt.
