The SJ52BK takes the familiar military baker pant and rebuilds it through Samurai’s approach to heavyweight fabric and denim construction. Based on the brand’s olive SJ52BP Baker Pants, this black version uses a newly developed 15oz selvedge back satin that feels considerably more substantial and textured than the smoother back satin normally associated with military fatigues.

Rather than using the fine yarns typically chosen to give back satin its smoother surface, Samurai weaves this fabric from thick, uneven yarns at a high density. The result is a stiff, sturdy cloth with plenty of visible texture when new. At 15oz, it has the weight and structure we normally associate with heavyweight denim, but the back satin weave gives it its own character and allows the fabric to soften and develop a better drape as it is worn.

The black colour is created using yarn dyed threads rather than overdyeing the finished garment. This gives the fabric better colour fastness than a conventional garment dyed black while still allowing it to age. Samurai specifically notes that the black will gradually develop toward a softer, whitish grey with repeated wear and washing, bringing out more of the irregular character of the yarn and weave over time.

The construction also reflects Samurai’s background as a jeans maker. Selvedge runs along the side seams, bringing a detail normally associated with their denim into a military inspired trouser. The heavier fabric is paired with black pinewood tuck buttons chosen to suit the substantial cloth, while Samurai’s Union Ticket adds another small piece of the brand’s familiar detailing.

Fit stays close to the practical origins of a baker pant without becoming excessively wide. Samurai cuts the SJ52BK as a regular straight with a slightly deeper rise, leaving comfortable room through the seat and thigh before continuing into a straightforward leg. It gives the 15oz fabric enough room to soften and drape naturally while maintaining a clean silhouette.
