Samurai Jeans - Indigo Selvedge Bandana [SJ-BANDANA-04]

The Samurai Jeans Indigo Selvedge Bandana takes the familiar American bandana and rebuilds it through Japanese textile traditions. The SJ-BANDANA-04 starts with the recognizable layout of a classic “cookie” bandana, then replaces and reworks elements of the pattern with traditional Japanese motifs.

Rather than using a standard printed cotton cloth, Samurai weaves the bandana from fine-count cotton yarn that has been rope dyed with indigo. Rope dyeing is the same basic dyeing method associated with traditional indigo denim production, allowing the yarn to retain the depth and variation that makes indigo increasingly interesting as it is worn and washed.

The pattern itself is created using discharge printing, known in Japan as bassen. Instead of adding an opaque layer of pigment over the indigo, selected areas of colour are removed from the dyed fabric to reveal the design. Samurai specifically draws on a discharge-printing tradition long associated with Kyoto dyeing culture, allowing the detailed motifs to remain clear without covering up the natural character of the indigo underneath.

It is a considerably more involved process than a conventional printed bandana. The combination of rope-dyed yarn and discharge printing gives the cloth a depth that changes depending on the light, while the indigo will continue to soften and develop more variation through regular use and washing.

Finished with traditional selvedge edges, the bandana measures approximately 53 × 53 cm. Wear it around the neck, use it as a pocket square or simply let it live in the back pocket and age alongside a pair of jeans. It is a small piece, but one that carries many of the same fabric and dyeing details that make Samurai's denim interesting in the first place.

Fabric & Care

100% cotton.

The fine-count yarn is rope dyed with indigo before weaving, giving the fabric its characteristic depth of colour. Because it is genuine indigo, expect the shade to gradually soften and develop greater variation with use and repeated washing.

Wash cold with similar dark colours and air dry. Indigo may transfer onto light-coloured clothing, upholstery or other surfaces, particularly when new.
