TCB’s Black Cat Jacket takes its inspiration from a 1920s Black Bear chore jacket in the brand’s vintage archive, carrying over some of the more unusual details found on pre-war workwear. The defining features are the asymmetrical front pockets and raglan sleeves, giving the jacket a noticeably different shape from the more familiar square-cut chore coats that came later.

The Blue Pin Check fabric is where this version really separates itself. TCB uses a 10.2oz 100% cotton plain weave constructed from rope-dyed coloured yarns paired with undyed yarns in the warp. The result is a very fine check that TCB describes almost like a small-scale checked duck cloth, with a firmer and more substantial feel than conventional denim of a similar weight.

Because the coloured yarns are rope dyed, the Blue sections are designed to gradually lose colour through wear and washing. Fresh out of the box the pattern is crisp and high contrast, but as the surface colour fades the cloth should soften visually and take on the muted, irregular character associated with older workwear fabrics. On the Blue version, TCB also uses faded-orange-toned bar tacks as a small contrasting detail.

The raglan sleeves allow plenty of freedom through the shoulders, while the unusual pocket shapes keep the jacket rooted in its 1920s source material. TCB notes that the Black Cat fits slightly smaller than its Carhartt Chore Coat and Cat Head Jacket, so anyone familiar with those styles may want to move up one size.

Fabric & Care: Made from 10.2oz 100% cotton pin-check plain weave. Rope-dyed coloured yarns are woven together with undyed yarns, allowing the Blue portions to gradually fade and soften in appearance with repeated wear. Wash cold with similar colours when necessary and hang dry. Avoid excessive heat to preserve the shape of the jacket and encourage natural ageing.

Fit: The Black Cat Jacket fits slightly smaller than TCB’s Carhartt Chore Coat and Cat Head Jacket. If you already wear either of those styles, TCB recommends considering one size larger in the Black Cat. Raglan sleeves provide additional freedom through the shoulders and arms.
