UES MFG.CO.’s 60WH-I Honeycomb Thermal combines a substantial 12.5oz thermal knit with rope-dyed indigo yarn, giving a traditional cold weather base layer the same kind of ageing potential normally associated with raw denim. UES knits three cotton yarns together to create additional thickness while maintaining a soft, flexible hand that remains comfortable against the body.

The honeycomb structure creates a deeply textured surface with raised and recessed sections throughout the fabric. Beyond giving the shirt its distinctive appearance, this construction helps retain warm air while still allowing the cotton knit to move naturally with the wearer. Despite the substantial weight, UES specifically designed the fabric to remain soft and easy to move in rather than feeling dense or restrictive.

Unlike an indigo garment dye, the yarn itself is rope dyed before the fabric is knitted. The indigo remains concentrated around the outside of the yarn while the centre stays lighter, allowing the surface colour to gradually wear away and reveal the lighter cotton underneath. The raised sections of the honeycomb, elbows, cuffs, seams and other high friction areas should develop increasingly pronounced variations in blue with regular wear and washing.

Working with yarn-dyed indigo knitwear is unusually difficult because the yarn readily transfers colour onto knitting machinery, limiting production to a small number of Japanese factories willing to work with it. UES also uses a special four-needle sewing machine to keep the seams relatively flat despite the thickness of the fabric. The result is a heavyweight thermal that offers substantial warmth from the beginning and considerably more visual character as the indigo begins to age.

Fabric & Care: Made from 100% cotton with three yarns knitted together to create an approximately 12.5oz honeycomb thermal fabric. The yarn is rope dyed in indigo before knitting, leaving a lighter core beneath the dyed surface and allowing denim-like fading to develop with wear. Indigo transfer is expected, especially while new. UES recommends washing and rinsing in lukewarm water before initial wear to help reduce transfer. Wash separately from other garments and hang dry.

Fit: Designed as a relatively close fitting thermal layer with natural stretch from the honeycomb knit. UES sizing generally runs smaller than typical North American sizing, and this style is intended to sit fairly close to the body. The garment has already been wash processed, so minimal additional shrinkage should be expected with cold washing and hang drying. We recommend comparing our garment measurements with a thermal or long sleeve shirt you already own before selecting your size.
