Indigofera - Clint 14oz Regular Straight Gunpowder Black Selvedge Denim Jeans

The Clint is one of Indigofera’s original jean fits, dating back to the brand’s first collection in 2009. It is a straightforward regular straight jean with a medium rise and enough room through the leg to let the denim do the talking. This version uses Indigofera’s distinctive 14oz Gunpowder Black Japanese selvedge denim, giving the classic Clint silhouette a completely different ageing story from traditional indigo.

Gunpowder is a 100% cotton selvedge denim woven in Japan by Nihon Menpu. Indigofera wanted to develop a black denim that would change with wear in much the same way as a rope dyed indigo fabric rather than simply remaining uniformly black. The result is a deep black Japanese selvedge denim with a crisp raw hand and plenty of character waiting underneath the surface.

The yarn is sulphur dyed and rope dyed to create the Gunpowder colour. Because the dye remains concentrated toward the exterior of the yarn rather than completely penetrating its core, repeated wear gradually exposes the lighter cotton underneath. Creases, seams, pocket edges, knees and other high friction areas become increasingly visible as the denim ages.

That makes Gunpowder particularly interesting if you already understand the appeal of breaking in raw indigo denim. Instead of moving through different shades of blue, the jeans begin almost uniformly black and gradually develop their character through charcoal, grey and eventually much lighter areas of wear. The result is a greyscale version of the fading process that makes raw denim so personal.

At 14oz, the fabric has enough weight and structure to feel substantial without moving into heavyweight territory. The denim is sanforized but left unwashed, so the jeans arrive crisp, dark and largely untouched. Sanforization controls the majority of the potential shrinkage while still allowing you to begin the break-in process from the start.

Construction stays traditional with a five pocket layout, button fly, iron buttons and copper rivets. Indigofera finishes the jeans with its custom hardware and leather rear flasher, keeping the detailing understated so the black denim and the way it changes over time remain the focus.

The Clint has a medium rise with comfortable room through the seat and thigh before continuing into a classic straight leg. Compared with the tapered Buck, the Clint maintains considerably more width below the knee and through the hem. It is an easy, traditional silhouette that works particularly well with boots and heavier footwear while giving the 14oz denim plenty of room to move and break in naturally.

Fabric & Shrinkage: Made from 14oz 100% cotton Japanese Gunpowder Black selvedge denim. The fabric is sanforized but left unwashed, giving you the crisp hand and deep black colour of raw denim while controlling most of the initial shrinkage. Some minor movement can still occur after the first wash, particularly through the inseam. Wash cold and hang dry to minimize additional shrinkage and preserve the black colour for longer.

Fit: The Clint is Indigofera’s classic regular straight fit, with a medium rise and comfortable room through the seat and thigh. The leg remains straight through the knee and hem rather than tapering noticeably toward the ankle. Compared with the Buck, expect a more traditional silhouette with additional room through the lower leg.
