Samurai Jeans - 15oz Kanoko Brown Selvedge Denim Jacket [S552PX-BR]

The Samurai Jeans S552PX-BR takes the familiar Type II denim jacket and rebuilds it around the brand’s distinctive 15oz Kanoko Brown selvedge denim. Made in Japan from 100% Texas cotton, it has the texture and irregularity expected from Samurai, but replaces traditional indigo with a warm brown fabric designed to develop a much more tonal kind of wear.

“Kanoko” translates to “fawn pattern,” referencing the spotted coat of a young deer. Deer have a long history in Japanese poetry and culture, while the name also makes sense once you see the fabric up close. Short-staple slub yarn and natural nep create an uneven, variegated surface with different shades and textures running throughout the brown denim.

The fabric itself was inspired by rare brown denim used in military clothing during periods when indigo supplies were limited. Historically, logwood was used to create the brown colour. For the Kanoko fabric, Samurai instead uses Suren dye, a colourfast dye with its own history in vintage military garments. Rather than producing the dramatic blue-to-white contrast associated with indigo, it gradually softens into different shades within the same brown colour family. Abrasion, creasing and repeated wear will still produce visible fades, but the overall effect is warmer and more subtle.

The 15oz denim is woven from 100% Texas cotton slub yarn, giving the jacket a substantial hand with plenty of natural texture from the beginning. The fabric is rugged without reaching into extreme heavyweight territory, making it easier to layer while still having enough structure to develop strong creases and wear patterns over time.

Construction is based around Samurai’s S552, a modified Type II silhouette with dual flap chest pockets, traditional front action pleats and side waist adjusters. Samurai adds welted hand-warmer pockets at the waist, making the jacket considerably more practical for everyday wear while keeping the overall design rooted in mid-century denim workwear.

Iron pine tree buttons, copper rivets and a leather patch bring in Samurai’s familiar finishing details. The jacket has been rinsed to remove the majority of its initial shrinkage and arrives ready to wear, whether paired with the matching S0150BRX Kanoko Brown jeans or worked into a wardrobe on its own.

Fabric & Care

100% cotton, 15oz Japanese selvedge denim woven from Texas cotton slub yarn.

Unlike indigo denim, the Suren dyed brown warp is designed to fade gradually within the same colour family. Expect the fabric to soften with wear while developing lighter brown tones, creasing and greater variation through areas of abrasion.

The jacket has been rinsed to remove the majority of its initial shrinkage. Some additional settling may still occur depending on water temperature and drying method.

Wash cold with similar colours and hang dry to minimize further shrinkage and preserve the character of the fabric.

Fit

Regular fit with a classic Type II inspired silhouette.

The S552PX-BR has enough room for comfortable layering while maintaining the shorter proportions traditionally associated with this style of denim jacket. Side waist adjusters allow the fit through the hem to be fine-tuned.
