Indigofera - "Dia De Muertos" Wool Blanket

Indigofera’s Norwegian wool blankets have become a distinctive part of the Swedish brand’s collection, providing a larger canvas for the artwork and collaborations that run alongside its denim and workwear. Dia De Muertos was created with Swedish artist Björn Atldax as part of his ongoing Skull Project, combining traditional Norwegian blanket production with artwork inspired by Mexico’s Día de Muertos celebration.

Despite its association with death, Día de Muertos is fundamentally a celebration of remembrance. Observed at the beginning of November, the tradition brings together Indigenous Mexican customs with later Catholic influences, creating a time for families to honour and remember those who have died. Atldax draws from that visual language rather than treating the subject simply as skull imagery.

Several symbols associated with the celebration appear throughout the artwork. Skulls represent loved ones who have passed, monarch butterflies symbolize the returning souls of the departed, and marigolds traditionally help guide those spirits between the worlds of the living and the dead. Woven together across the blanket, these elements give the design considerably more meaning once you understand what is happening within the artwork.

The blanket itself is made from 100% wool and produced in Norway. The natural wool provides warmth, breathability and resilience, making the piece practical enough for regular use despite the scale and complexity of the artwork. The woven construction also gives the graphic a depth and texture that would be difficult to achieve with a conventional surface print.

At approximately 150 x 200 cm, Dia De Muertos is large enough for Atldax’s artwork to become a genuine visual feature. It works naturally over a sofa or bed, but the scale also makes it particularly suited to being displayed as a textile piece. Each blanket comes with a bag for storage or travel, making it easy to bring along to a cabin, campsite or anywhere else a substantial wool blanket makes sense.

Dia De Muertos was produced as a limited, numbered piece, adding another dimension to what is already one of Indigofera’s more distinctive artist collaborations. It sits somewhere between blanket, artwork and functional object, but importantly, it was made to be used. The Norwegian wool is durable, the imagery has a story behind it, and the piece should only gain more character as it becomes part of a home.

Fabric & Care: Made from 100% wool and woven in Norway. Wool provides natural warmth, breathability and durability while giving the artwork its substantial texture. Wool generally requires less frequent washing than cotton and can often be refreshed simply by airing it out. Follow the manufacturer’s attached care instructions for deeper cleaning and avoid conventional machine washing unless specifically directed.

Fit: Approximately 150 x 200 cm, or 59 x 79 inches. The generous dimensions make it suitable as a substantial sofa throw, bed layer or large textile wall display while still remaining practical enough to travel with in the included bag.
