The Samurai Jeans S0150BRX “Kanoko Brown” takes the brand’s rugged approach to Japanese selvedge denim in an entirely different direction from traditional indigo. Built from a specially developed 15oz brown selvedge denim, the fabric draws inspiration from rare historical military denim while offering the texture, durability, and long-term aging that define Samurai Jeans.

“Kanoko” translates to “fawn pattern,” referencing the spotted coat of a young deer. Deer have a long history in Japanese culture and poetry and have traditionally been regarded as sacred messengers of the gods. The name also reflects the warm brown colour and naturally irregular surface of the denim.

The inspiration for the fabric comes from historical brown denim that appeared during periods when traditional indigo supplies were limited. Rather than recreating the original colour with logwood, Samurai selected Suren dye, a colourfast dye with its own history in vintage military garments. Unlike indigo, which can produce dramatic blue-to-white contrast, the brown dye gradually softens into lighter shades within the same colour family. Wear and abrasion create increasingly visible creases, texture, and tonal variation without losing the distinctive warmth of the original brown.

The 15oz denim is woven from 100% Texas cotton slub yarn with a naturally neppy surface. The irregular yarn gives the fabric a rugged texture from the beginning while providing plenty of opportunity for additional character to emerge with wear.

Cut in Samurai’s regular straight fit, the S0150BRX maintains a classic silhouette with comfortable room through the leg. Signature Samurai details include iron pine tree buttons, copper coin-shaped rivets, “Shogyo Mujo” jacquard pocket bags, and an exclusive leather patch and flasher created specifically for the Kanoko series.

Finished in a one-wash state and made in Japan, the S0150BRX offers a distinctly different denim experience for anyone looking beyond traditional indigo, combining Samurai’s unmistakable construction with a brown fabric that will become increasingly personal with wear.
