The UES 400-Z takes the brand’s approach to slow woven Japanese denim and pushes it into a considerably fuller silhouette. Made from a heavyweight 17oz selvedge denim, the 400-Z is UES’s widest fitting jean, combining a deep rise and full straight leg with vintage details including a cinch back, riveted crotch and offset rear pockets.

The denim is woven from long slub yarn made primarily from American cotton. UES deliberately uses thick, irregular yarn rather than trying to create a perfectly smooth surface, giving the 17oz fabric a pronounced coarse texture from the beginning. The heavier yarn also plays an important role in how the denim ages, creating more irregular points of abrasion and a rougher, more varied fade pattern as the jeans are worn.

UES weaves the fabric extremely slowly on traditional power looms, reducing both loom speed and yarn tension as much as possible. This slower process avoids flattening or stressing the yarn during weaving and allows more of its natural irregularity to remain in the finished cloth. The result is a dense, substantial denim with visible slub, nep and uneven texture rather than the uniform surface of modern mass produced fabric.

The 400-Z is cut significantly wider than UES’s standard jeans. The rise is deep, with generous room through the seat and thigh before continuing into a wide, full straight leg. UES notes that the silhouette is even wider than the 400-WW, making this the most relaxed denim fit currently offered by the brand.

Several of the construction details come directly from vintage jeans. The rear pockets are positioned slightly farther toward the outside of the garment, an old detail intended to make them easier to access while seated and reduce concentrated wear when riding. A functional cinch back provides additional adjustment at the waist, while the crotch is secured with a rivet rather than a modern bartack. Copper rivets, raised belt loops, heavyweight pocket bags and red line selvedge complete the workwear focused construction.

The jeans are sold one washed rather than raw. UES washes each pair before measuring and selling it, removing the majority of the initial shrinkage without adding artificial fading or distressing. From there, the dark indigo denim is left to develop naturally, with the thick long slub yarn gradually producing increasingly visible vertical texture, creasing and contrast unique to the wearer.

Fabric & Care

100% cotton, 17oz Japanese selvedge denim woven from long slub yarn made primarily with American cotton.

UES weaves the fabric at an exceptionally slow speed with as little tension as possible, preserving the irregular character of the thick yarn. Expect visible slub, nep and unevenness in the denim. These are intentional characteristics of the fabric rather than defects.

The jeans have been one washed before sale, so the majority of the initial shrinkage has already occurred. Some additional settling may still happen depending on washing and drying conditions.

UES recommends washing denim rather than avoiding water indefinitely. Wash separately with a mild detergent, as indigo bleeding and colour transfer are expected. Hang dry in the shade and avoid tumble drying, particularly to protect the leather patch.

Fit

UES Classic Straight fit with a deep rise and very generous straight leg.

The 400-Z is currently UES’s widest fitting jean, with more room than the already relaxed 400-WW. It provides substantial space through the seat and thigh and continues into a wide leg with very little reduction toward the hem.

Because UES sizing and finished measurements can vary from standard North American tagged sizing, we strongly recommend comparing the garment measurements against a pair of jeans you already own and like the fit of before choosing your size.
