UES MFG.CO.’s 60BW Big Waffle Shirt takes the traditional cotton thermal and exaggerates one of its most functional characteristics, the waffle knit itself. Made from 100% cotton using thick yarn on a low gauge knitting machine, the fabric develops noticeably larger cells than a conventional thermal. Those recessed sections create small pockets that hold warm air close to the body, providing insulation without requiring synthetic fibres or an excessively dense knit.

The substantial fabric is approximately 13oz, but the loose low gauge construction gives it considerably more stretch than the weight might suggest. Rather than feeling stiff or restrictive, the waffle structure expands naturally with movement and gradually conforms to the wearer. This makes the 60BW useful both as a warm base layer underneath heavier clothing and as a standalone long sleeve shirt through cooler weather.

Because the fabric is much thicker than conventional jersey, UES uses flat seam construction to minimize bulky ridges where panels join together. The flatter seams sit more comfortably against the body while reinforcing the utilitarian thermal underwear roots of the design. The hem is finished with overlock stitching and the body has a straightforward box shaped silhouette, keeping the focus on the oversized texture of the knit.

Off White particularly emphasizes the construction of the fabric. Without a dark dye hiding the surface, the raised cotton yarns, deep waffle cells and natural variations in the knit remain clearly visible. Like much of UES’s clothing, it is designed to become softer and more comfortable through repeated wear and washing, making it the kind of simple layering piece that becomes increasingly useful the longer it stays in rotation.

Fabric & Care: Made from 100% cotton using thick yarn and a low gauge knitting machine to create UES’s oversized waffle structure. The raised and recessed knit traps pockets of warm air while allowing enough stretch for comfortable movement. The garment has been one washed, so significant additional shrinkage should not be expected with proper care. Wash cold and hang dry. Avoid high heat to preserve the fit and structure of the cotton knit.

Fit: UES thermals are traditionally cut relatively close to the body so the waffle fabric can function effectively as a warm base layer. The knit itself has a good amount of natural stretch, but UES sizing generally runs smaller than typical North American sizing. We recommend comparing our garment measurements with a thermal or long sleeve shirt you already own before selecting your size.
